Lake Cumberland District Health Department

A healthy today for a brighter tomorrow.

Worksite Wellness

The average employee spends between 8 to 12 hours a day, 5 days a week at work; therefore, the worksite is an important place for health promotion, disease prevention and health protection. Employers with effective worksite wellness programs and policies can reduce health risks and improve the quality of life for their workers.  Worksite Wellness programs refer to coordinated and comprehensive strategies which include policies, programs, benefits and environmental support to meet the health and safety needs of all employees.

Research shows that it is in the employers’ best economic interest to help employees improve their health.  Kentucky is an unhealthy state: a national leader in smoking, obesity, cancer and heart disease.  Many related health care costs can be avoided by improving health through healthy lifestyle changes.  Healthier employees have better overall fitness, higher morale, are more productive, and use fewer sick days.  Worksite Wellness Programs are a new opportunity for Public Health to improve the health and quality of life of our community.

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department can provide three levels of services to assist worksites with their wellness initiatives.  Learn more by clicking:

  1. GET STARTED (Pre-intervention Screenings and Assessments),
  2. ADDRESSING NEEDS (Clinical Interventions),
  3. ONGOING SUPPORT (Agency Driven Activities/Education).

Or, if you decide you want to do it on your own, we can train you in the Work@Health® Model.  Learn more by clicking: Work@Health® .

Level 1: Get Started (Pre-Intervention Screening and Assessments)

As part of a comprehensive worksite wellness program, the Lake Cumberland District Health Department can provide several screenings and assessments to give employers a thorough knowledge of their staff’s general health status and attitudes, as well as feedback in regards to the organization’s environment and culture in relation to Worksite Wellness.

Potential Screenings and Assessments Include

CDC Worksite Health Score Card

The Centers for Disease Control Worksite Health Score Card, is a tool designed to help employers assess the extent to which they have implemented evidence-based health promotion interventions, helps them to identify gaps in their health promotion programs, and assists them in the prioritization of high-impact strategies for health promotion at their worksites.

Employee Interest and Needs Survey

The Employee Interest and Needs Survey is utilized to assess the employees’ overall level of interest in regards to improving their health.  It also identifies which intervention strategies the employees would find most beneficial.

Health Calculator and Wellness Profile

Developed by experts at the LCDHD, the Health Calculator and Wellness Profile is a robust health education tool which empowers individuals to not only better understand their current health status, but also provides suggestions for how to improve such through preventive measures and health screenings.

For those agencies contracting with us to provide Worksite Wellness support, we can combine your employees’ results into a group report which will provide a snapshot of the health of your personnel as a whole and guide intervention efforts.

Biometric Screen

The Biometric Screen combines basic lab work and biometric measures with general counseling.

• Lab Work Includes:
o Total Cholesterol
o LDL
o HDL
o Ratio
o Triglycerides
o Glucose
• Biometric Measures Include:
o Height
o Weight
o BMI
o Blood Pressure
o Waist Measurement

The lab work is completed using a machine with immediate results and only requires a finger stick.  We are able to provide same day counseling on site. Participants with abnormal results will be referred to their medical provider.  Participants will receive one on one counseling regarding their results.

Glucose Screening

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.  Because people with diabetes often have no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, they may be undiagnosed for many years.

The screening is completed using a machine with immediate results and only requires a finger stick.  We are able to provide same day, one on one counseling on site. Participants with abnormal results will be referred to their medical provider. For most accurate results, participants need to be fasting –no food or drink for at least 8 hours.  Total time for screening and counseling is approximately 10 minutes.

Level 2. Addressing Needs (Clinical Interventions)

Once your agency’s Screenings and Assessments are completed and analyzed, they can be utilized to customize a Worksite Wellness Program specifically targeting the unique needs of your personnel.  While Ongoing Support and Education will be the key to a sustainable Worksite Wellness Program, Addressing Needs identified by your screenings can actually “jump-start” your employees’ progress on the road to good health.  Our interventions are provided by qualified professionals (Diabetes Educators and Health Educators) utilizing the evidence based programs summarized below.

Potential Clinical Interventions Include:

CPR & First Aid

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department provides CPR and First Aid classes using the American Heart Association training, education materials and certification (Certification lasts two years).

Diabetes Prevention Program

Staff at LCDHD are CDC registered providers of The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Lifestyle Change Program.  This is an evidence-based program for preventing type 2 diabetes.  Participants work with a lifestyle coach in a group setting to learn how to make lifestyle changes that can reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% in people with pre-diabetes.

Freedom From Smoking (FFS) Cessation Program

The Freedom From Smoking (FFS) Cessation Program is ranked one of the top cessation programs in the country. The American Lung Association, Freedom From Smoking program has been helping people stop smoking for over 35 years. This smoking cessation program is one of the top ranked cessation programs in the country, with 51% success rate at the end of the program.

Our sessions are led by trained health educators who specialize in the Freedom From Smoking and have been providing smoking cessation classes for over 14 years across the Lake Cumberland District.

Personal Empowerment Plan

With the support of our staff, Personal Empowerment Plan (PEP) is a self-directed worksite program to promote healthy eating and moderate physical activity. Individual evaluations are provided to determine participates readiness for change.  The program materials include workbooks for healthy eating and physical activity targeting employees based on their particular readiness level to change.  A coordinator’s kit, promotional brochures, and posters are also included in the program.

Level 3: Ongoing Support (Agency Driven Activities and Education)

Once your agency’s Screenings and Assessments are completed and analyzed, they can be utilized to customize a Worksite Wellness Program specifically targeting the unique needs of your personnel.  While Ongoing Support and Education will be the key to a sustainable Worksite Wellness Program, Addressing Needs identified by your screenings can actually “jump-start” your employees’ progress on the road to good health.  Our interventions are provided by qualified professionals (Diabetes Educators and Health Educators) utilizing the evidence based programs summarized below.
