How Climate Affects Health

Climate change, along with other health stressors, impacts human health and disease in various ways. Some existing health threats will worsen and new ones will arise. Vulnerability varies based on factors such as age, economic resources, and location. In the U.S., disruptions to physical, biological, and ecological systems can affect public health. These disruptions contribute to increased respiratory and cardiovascular disease, injuries, and premature deaths due to extreme weather events. They also lead to changes in the prevalence and geographic distribution of food- and water-borne illnesses, infectious diseases, and mental health risks.
