Why Is This a Health Risk?
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in the organism entering the bloodstream, leading to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
As of May 27, 2026, the CDC has reported 119 cases of Salmonella infections across 36 states linked to this multistate outbreak associated with moringa-containing dietary supplements, with 32 hospitalizations reported. No deaths have been documented.
